Becoming Barnard 1
Since 1923, the manuscript has been in the collections of Barnard College, thanks to Mary E. Larkin Joline’s interest in promoting musical education. Part of her bequest to Barnard upon her death in 1926 includes an additional $10000 to be used for the care of the musical instruments and manuscripts which Mary Joline presented to the college in 1923 — Barnard 1 included.
In 2010 the manuscript was moved to the holdings of Columbia’s Rare Books and Manuscripts Library for preservation and study. There is little scholarship on Barnard 1 at present, but it is attracting ever-growing interest and, doubtless, much future work is forthcoming.
