The State of the Manuscript: Examining Problem Areas
This exhibit includes a comprehensive index of areas of Barnard 1 that have experienced damage or deterioration, and subsequently may require conservator attention. Barnard 1 is, relatively speaking, in quite good conditition, surviving almost entirely intact since the fourteenth century. However, as shown here, there are many instances that are of interest or perhaps even concern. They have been divided into three general categories:
- Issues of paint/ink: Fading, as well as abrasion, flaking, or otherwise loss of pigment.
- Issues of materials: Stains, holes, and tears.
- Issues of omission: Missing material (namely pages).
